Saratoga Arts made this album possible with an Individual Artist Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature.

Thanks to Justin Knudsen for his invaluable advice in the planning and grant application process.

My deep thanks must go to my friends and family, my bandmates, my music teachers and musical heroes, and my music students for their support, encouragement, and constant inspiration.  Special thanks go to Mel Bailey for her brutal honesty and impeccable taste, her vision, and no shortage of laughter, song, and good food.

This album is the culmination of a long and ongoing journey.  Growing up in Upstate New York, among the cows and cornfields south of Amsterdam, I fell in love with handmade music.  Some of my earliest and fondest memories of childhood are of sneaking back downstairs after being put to bed during parties and cookouts to listen to my parents’ friends gather the acoustic guitars around the piano to play Beatles and Rolling Stones songs and sing themselves hoarse.  I am forever grateful that I grew up in a household not only with an excellent and wide-ranging record library, but a community and culture of living music in which participation was not just encouraged but assumed.  I learned music by watching my father learn music, adding a new instrument to his repertoire every couple of years, and I learned songwriting by watching my mother transcribe the lyrics and arrangements of her favorite songs by ear.  Music was vital and ever present in our house and I can never thank my parents enough for that gift.

The songs on this album come from years of struggle, from trying to find a home for that gift in the wide world.  From Albany to Boston to New Orleans, I searched for a place where my musical dreams could flourish and I worked every odd job you can imagine trying to support myself in the meantime.
